COMMUNITYPainting America's Future: An Army of Torches Joins the Apache Junction 250 Flag Project
Seven An Army of Torches participants contributed hand-painted tiles to the America 250 Community Art Project, creating a stunning mosaic American flag now permanently displayed at the Apache Junction Public Library.
In celebration of America's 250th anniversary, An Army of Torches joined forces with the Apache Junction Public Library for the America's Future Community Art Project — a collaborative effort inviting community members to paint individual tiles that would come together to form a massive mosaic American flag.
The concept was beautiful in its simplicity: hundreds of small canvas tiles, each painted by a different community member, arranged into the red, white, and blue pattern of the American flag. Each tile carried a personal message — a hope, a dream, a wish, or a value — making the flag not just a patriotic symbol but a living document of what this community believes in.
Seven An Army of Torches members showed up to contribute their own artistic visions. Working with acrylic markers and paint, each participant created a unique tile that reflected their personal connection to service, leadership, and American values. The results were as diverse as the artists themselves:
A striking soldier silhouette against a crimson sunset — a powerful tribute to military service and sacrifice. A soaring bird painted in bold brushstrokes against an olive background, symbolizing freedom and the spirit of flight. Military unit emblems rendered in deep blue with careful detail, honoring the armed forces. A vibrant star bursting with color on a red canvas, surrounded by smaller stars — a celebration of the American spirit. And hand-lettered messages like "Loving Life" flowing across blue canvases in luminous script, capturing the optimism at the heart of the project.
Every tile told a story. Every brushstroke carried intention.
The finished flag — a breathtaking grid of over 200 individual tiles — is now permanently displayed at the Apache Junction Public Library for the entire community to see. A placard beside it reads: "To Celebrate America250 we invited the community to Focus on the Future! Sharing of hopes, dreams, wishes, and more!" The project was supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
For our seven participants, this was more than an art project. It was an exercise in the Carry · Light · Pass framework in action: carrying the weight of creative expression, lighting up a public space with personal meaning, and passing forward a message that will inspire library visitors for years to come.
This is what community looks like. Not grand gestures, but individual contributions that form something greater than the sum of their parts — just like an army of torches.
